Sunrise Lions host June 20-24 camp for deaf, hard-of-hearing children in Las Cruces

The Sunrise Lions Club of Las Cruces will once again host the Lions Camp for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children, which will be held June 20-24 at Meerscheidt Recreation Center, 1600 E. Hadley Ave.

The day-long camp is for children ages 5-12 with documented hearing loss, said Sunrise Lions Board of Directors member Robert Sherman.

Children attend the camp free of charge. Registration is still open, Sherman said, but space is limited.

“The focus of the camp is to bring children with hearing loss together on an equal platform to socialize and learn new activities,” Sherman said.

The 2022 camp will include a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) presentation from New Mexico State University, Sherman said, a capoeira (Brazilian martial arts) team from El Paso, a magic show and magic lessons from Las Cruces musician Jamie O’Hara and presentations by local K9 officers. There also will be athletic activities, including instruction by members of the NMSU soccer, tennis and volleyball teams, Sherman said.

Camp lunches will be sponsored by Andele Restaurant and the Las Cruces Wal-Mart on Valley Drive, he said.

The Sunrise Lions began sponsoring the camp in 2004. There were no camps in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic.

Chartered in 1979, the Sunrise Lions Club has given more than $500,000 in donations to various community groups and organizations, said Sherman, who has been a club member since 1990 and is a two-time past president.

Donations to the club are welcome, Sherman said.
