The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) will feature the pastel work of Colorado artist Dinah Swan in the main gallery during the month of April in a show called “Animal Magnetism.”
According to a DAAC news release, Swan has been painting for the last 12 years and has had an illustrious and varied career in the arts.
Swan’s work will be featured 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday through Thursday, April 29, at the DAAC Arts and Cultural Center, 250 W. Amador Ave. The gallery also will be open noon-5 p.m. Saturday, April 10.
Swan started her career as a dancer and actress, eventually earning her doctorate in theater, focusing on feminist theater of the 1970s. She worked as a director and university professor for more than two decades, writing 19 plays, all of which have been produced, six of them winning national awards. Along the way, she found time to write five novels.
Painting exclusively with pastels, Swan draws artistic inspiration from nature. She said she prefers animal subjects and southwestern landscapes.
“Animals inspire me,” Swan said. “I find pure joy in creating their images. I smile almost constantly while painting them and have been known to talk to them.”
Her work has been juried several times. A solo show featuring 33 of her paintings, “Animals of the Southwest,” was hosted at New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum. Swan has donated many pet portraits to groups raising money for animal-welfare activities.
