The light and shadow of Mesquite: Santa Fe artist catches the moods and mysteries of historic district in February show

Posted

Mesquite is the name of the show, the gallery and the street, as artist Santa Fe artist Carolyn Lamuniere comes to Las Cruces for a show during For the Love of Art Month.

Lamuniere’s show, “Mesquite Up Close,” will be exhibited at Mesquite Gallery, 340 N. Mesquite St. in the Historic Mesquite District of Las Cruces, just east of Downtown during the month of February.

An opening reception will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4 (“First Friday Ramble”) at the gallery.

“What I feel is the energy of what has been,” Lamuniere said in an artist statement. “Sometimes people look at my empty rooms and create scenarios: What has happened here? Who was in this space? What is the story?”

Lamuniere said painting these interiors is one of the two major parts of her work as an artist; the other is exteriors, she said, “looking at the world as light is reflected on architecture. I love patterns and shapes. The paintings may be realistic, but what interests me is the abstraction underneath, both physically and psychologically, and the mood created,” Lamuniere said.

“Although I love in Santa Fe, I have spent time in Las Cruces,” the artist said. “My brother-in-law is a photographer and has kindly driven me through the many neighborhoods in Las Cruces. I am particularly attracted to the Mesquite District with the very early buildings. The almost abstract simplicity lends itself to strong, simple forms. The harsh relentless light creates powerful shadows. I also like the many Craftsman houses for the same reason.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
