‘Three Tall Women’ opens June 3 at community theater with stellar cast, director

What a lineup Las Cruces Community Theatre (LCCT) has for the final show of its 2022-23 season!

The play is “Three Tall Women,” which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1994 and two Tony awards in 2018; the playwright is Edward Albee (1928-2016), who won a total of three Pulitzer Prizes for drama and two Tony awards for best play; the director is New Mexico State University Theatre Department Production Stage Manager Mike Wise, who is one of the most revered directors in Las Cruces; the all-star cast is comprised of Rachel Thomas-Chapel, Annie Pennies, Deborah Storm and Gus David Sanchez.

“The play reminds me of the old Sphinx riddle (from Oedipus Rex), ‘What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon and three legs at night?’" Wise said. “The answer is a human being (man). In the morning (as a baby) they crawl on all fours, as an adult (in the afternoon) they walk upright, and in old age (evening) they walk (with the aid of a cane) on three legs. People may ask, ‘How can you be three people at the same time?’ and you can, simply by being alive,” Wise said.

The play contains adult content and language.

Performances of “Three Tall Women” will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, June 3-4, 10-11 and 17-18 and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 12 and 19, at LCCT, 313 N. Main St. Downtown.
