Two Las Cruces area track athletes win at prestigious meet

Two Las Cruces area track and field athletes won gold in what is widely considered to be a preview of the state championship meet.

Organ Mountain High School’s Shaolin Munir took first place in the girls javelin competition (130 feet, 11 inches) at the Marilyn Sepulveda Meet of Champions Monday, April 11, at the UNM Track Stadium in Albuquerque.

Centennial High’s Agalelei Pili won the girls discus (126-3) at the same meet. Pili also took third place in the shot put (38-9).

“The Meet of Champions is a meet where you get a rare opportunity to match up with some of the best track performers in all classifications,” Organ Mountain High track coach David Nuñez said. “It serves as a nice gauge of where you stand currently in an event and how you compare with the state’s competition.

“Getting invited to the meet is an accomplishment in of itself,” Nuñez said. “Las Cruces was well-represented and all track athletes did an amazing job for their respective schools.”

The annual meet is by invitation only and athletes are chosen from classes 1A to 5A, based on overall ranking in each event. The top eight are invited to the meet for each event. No team score is tallied at the meet.

Organ Mountain had several other athletes who participated in the meet.

James Limon was second in the boys 200 meters (22.69) and fifth in the 100 meters (11.55). Beto Garcia was second in the boys javelin (154-8), and teammate Jonathan Torres was second in the boys pole vault (13-0).

Other standouts for the Knights were: Marisa Harrington, fourth place in girls 100 meters (13.15) and fifth in the 200 (26.75); Brett Bybee, fourth in the boys 1,600 meters (4:36.46); Jeron Wisner, fourth in the boys 800 (2:04.66); and Corbin Coombs, seventh in the boys 3,200 (10:35.58).

For Centennial High, Aveolela Pili was second in the girls shot put (39-10 1/2) and Lauren Ocampo was sixth in the girls discus (104-9). For the Centennial High boys, Dax Rios was eighth in the 3,200 (10:41.33).
