Accused shooter arrested after police pursuit

Posted

The Las Cruces Police Department identified the man killed in an April 29 shooting and reported that the man charged with shooting him to death, Isaiah Joseph Rea, is in custody after a three-day manhunt.

Rea, 25, was arrested at approximately 1 a.m. on May 2 on the 200 block of Three Crosses Avenue, police said, after a short vehicle pursuit.

The shooting occurred early in the morning on April 29 at a residence on Princess Jeanne Drive. Police were dispatched at about 3:30 a.m. and found Steven Sanchez, 34, suffering “at least one gunshot wound.” He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators obtained an arrest warrant on evidence that Rea was responsible. The police put out a call to the public for tips as to Rea’s whereabouts. He has been charged with first-degree murder, a capital felony, and is being held initially without bond at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

Prosecutors are seeking to hold Rea through his trial, which has yet to be scheduled. The pretrial detention hearing is set for Tuesday, May 7, in 3rd Judicial District court before Judge Douglas Driggers.
