George and Wanda Holland Retirement Exhibit
Friends and fans of George and Wanda Holland’s hand-thrown, glazed and fired Raku pottery are invited to attend their last exhibition in Las Cruces at the Franciscan Art Festival, Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1.
The Franciscan Festival of Fine Arts runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, August 31 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, September 1, at Holy Cross Retreat Center, 600 Holy Cross Rd., Mesilla Park. Info: 575-386-3576
The Agave Artists Cooperative Gallery, 2250 Calle de San Albino, Mesilla, features an exhibition by Zac Bannister for the month of September. A teacher at Organ Mountain High School, Bannister likes to explore sacred geometry, as well as alternative photo processes like cyanotype and VanDyke printing. A 5th Anniversary celebration will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 28.

The Branigan Cultural Center, 491 N. Main St., Las Cruces, presents “It Came from Beyond the Border” an exhibit featuring work by El Paso artist Angel Cabrales that embraces the artistry of 1950s science fiction B-movie posters and futuristic art to create powerful pieces that confront and comment on current U.S. immigration policies in the United States. The exhibit is on view through September 21, 2024.

The Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main St., Las Cruces, presents “Dunes & Dreams: A Portrait of White Sands National Park,” a stunning collection of photography from Emmitt Booher, created over a five year period through the constraints of a square photograph format. The exhibit will be on view from Sept. 6 – October 19, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6.

The Cloudcroft Art Society presents its annual Labor Day show and sale featuring original art works by local artists, including paintings in several media, photography and photographic art, pottery, basketry, greeting cards and more. The show will be on display from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, August 31, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, September 1, in the back room of the Nivison Library in the historic “Red Brick Schoolhouse,” 90 Swallow Pl., Cloudcroft. An exhibit devoted entirely to “Our Feathered Friends” is the subject of the September 2024 art display at the Deming Art Center, 100 S. Gold St., Deming. The exhibit showcasing the fantastical world of birds will be up from September 4-28, 2024, with a meet and greet for the artists, 1-3 p.m., Sunday, September 8.

Gallery 925, 925 N. Mesquite St., Las Cruces, presents “Ravens & Churches,” by local painters Linda Gendall, whose inspiration comes from the soot-colored birds of lore and legend, and John Scherber, whose work depicts rural chapels that the Spanish built for the native people in Mexico. Ravens & Churches will be on display September 6-28, 2024. An opening reception will be held 4-8 p.m., Friday, September 6.

The Grant County Art Guild Gallery, 316 N Bullard in Silver City, will host a “Meet the Artist” event featuring local weaver Anita McDaniel, from 5-7 p.m. on September 6, during the First Friday Art Walk. McDaniel learned the traditional art of wool hooking in Nova Scotia, and following tradition in materials and methods, brings a freshness to the art with her original designs, many of which have embraced our local culture.

The Grant County Art Guild Studio, 211 N. Texas, Ste C, Silver City, celebrates its annual “Creatures of the Gila” show from Labor Day weekend through September 8. In this engaging art and wildlife show, each entry depicts, or is inspired by, an actual “creature” (mammal, bird, reptile, fish or insect) that lives in the Gila River watershed.

Light Art Space, 209 W. Broadway, Silver City, presents “Solace in Nature,” an international exhibition using alternative processes juried by Christina Z Anderson, including work by 27 artists from across the globe. The Flash Gallery showcases the work of Chiricahua artists, including contemporary paintings, sculpture, and dolls, along with the baskets of the Women Weave the World campaign. Both exhibitions run from September 5 - October 5.

The Las Cruces Museum of Art, 491 N. Main St., Las Cruces, presents “Clyde Butcher: Lifeworks in Photography,” featuring 45 photographic prints in large format black & white, spanning his 50-year career and encompassing a wide range of images, from intimate portraits of a rare ghost orchid to majestic American landscapes. The exhibit will be on view Sept. 6 – Dec. 28.

The Mad Hatter Gallery, 221 N. Main St., Las Cruces, presents “Une Vie,” featuring the acid paintings of Salome Ali Jaffe, who uses a unique technique involving altering materials at the molecular level. Made in Silver City Gallery, 206 W. Broadway St., Silver City presents the exhibition “Shrooming in the Gila,” featuring new photography by New Mexico Press Association award-winner Kendra Milligan, for the month of September. This fascinating body of work provides the viewer with a glimpse into an often overlooked yet vital part of our beloved Gila Wilderness’ ecosystem. An opening reception for the artist will be held in the gallery from 5-7 p.m., Friday, September 6.

The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery, 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe, across from the historic Fountain Theatre, features two local artists for the month of September: Linda Hagen and Jean Wilkey. Hagen paints in oils, both in her home studio and plein air, a French expression which refers to the act of painting outdoors. Wilkey paints worlds populated with plants, animals, people and other objects that blur the line between still life and landscape.

The Mesquite Art Gallery, 340 N. Mesquite St., Las Cruces, presents “Women,” an exhibition by the Ten O’Clock Artists. “Woman” considers the accomplishments, strengths and spirit of women who overcome societal inequities that reinforce lingering stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination. The exhibition will kick off with an artist’s reception, 4:30-7 p.m., Friday, September 6.

Otero Artspace, 1118 Indiana Ave., Alamogordo, presents their September exhibition “An Abstract Connection,” featuring works by Liliane Pilot and Roy Van der Aa. Pilot is a self-taught artist whose interest in texture, color and words has been a driving force in her artistic creations. Van der Aa works with fragments of photographs to create painted collages as a way of re-imagining landscape painting. The exhibition opens with a reception 5-7 p.m. on Friday, September 6, and runs throughout the month of September.

RioBravoFineArt, 110 N. Broadway, Truth or Consequences, presents “The Poloroids,” an exhibition of Polaroid SX 70 photographs by H. Joe Waldrum, who was prolific in the use of the SX 70 format, and whose works currently reside in the photo archives collection at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe. The exhibition runs through October 21, 2024.
