Atomic Comedy blasts off at Rio Grande Theatre

Posted

John Padon is bringing Atomic Comedy to Las Cruces Wednesday, July 27, at the Rio Grande Theatre.

From a long comedy career starting in Albuquerque;, then to La Vegas, Nevada; Hawaii; and other places across the country, Padon brings his experience as he starts a tour of smaller southwestern cities. Joining him in turn on stage are national headliners Curt Fletcher and Mark Doyle.

Padon said Fletcher is “very funny,” and just sold a movie script. He is bringing a diverse group of amazing comedians to Las Cruces for the 80-minute show.

“I think it’s going to be great for Las Cruces,” Padon said. “I have been a comedian and TV writer for more than 30 years. I have an Emmy Award for comedy television writing and owned my own theater and show in Planet Hollywood and cruise ships around the world.”

In 2016, Padon sold his comedy businesses, Sin City Comedy and Sin City Theatre, and moved to Maui. But in Maui, he got bored and created the “Maui Comedy Series.”

Now, after moving back to his roots in Albuquerque, Padon is at it again with Atomic Comedy.

“We will be performing our inaugural show July 27 at the Rio Grande Theatre,” he said.

His plans for the future of the show include other well-known names and streaming stars.

“I am putting together a tour of New Mexico cities to enable me to bring acts that would normally be too expensive for small venues,” he said. “The venues include Taos, Farmington, Santa Fe and Albuquerque for now, and possibly will grow from there.”

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Padon was working in the insurance business when he won a comedy contest in town. That’s how he ended up going to work for an improv comedy club, traveled around the country and opened for numerous acts in Las Vegas.

Eventually, he was approached by the producers of “The Wonder Years” and contributed to its winning an Emmy as a staff writer on the show. That gave him the inspiration to return to Las Vegas and build his own theater to produce Sin City Comedy and run a burlesque show at his theater.

“I got to say leaving home and traveling for 30 years really makes you appreciate New Mexico,” he said.
