“The ladies earned their place in the national championship,” said Jamar Cotton, an assistant coach for the New Mexico Banitas tackle football team based in Las Cruces.
The Banitas lost the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) Division III American Conference National Championship game 58-6 to the West Palm Coyotes July 21 in Canton, Ohio.
“Though we didn’t get the results we wanted, the team for the first time got a taste of the national championship atmosphere,” said Cotton, one of the Banitas’ coaches. Brian Bartlett is the head coach.
“We will take a couple of weeks off and then start off-season workouts and get ready to get back to the top and bring it home,” Cotton said. “It was an amazing season and I’m super proud of this team all around! It was an historical season and we have a lot left.
“Look out for us for the 2024 season,” Cotton said. “We will also be recruiting new talent as well so we hope to get more ladies involved for the 2024 season.”
The Banitas finished the 2023 regular season with a 4-2 record. They handily won first- and second-round playoff games to reach the national championship.
