Bowman helps make dreams come true

Educators and scientists all agree it’s difficult for children to learn on an empty stomach. That’s why we have so many programs working to ensure young students have access to food at school.

Wanda Bowman believes, and I’m sure we’d all agree, kids also need a good night’s sleep.

“Too many children in our community don’t have a bed of their own,” said Bowman, owner of Ashley HomeStore.

A couple of years ago, Bowman delivered a bed to a child in need, and was surprised.

“There was only one place with room enough to hold the bed -- the kitchen!” Bowman said. “But she clutched her new pillow and smiled like you can’t believe.”

That prompted Bowman to launch “Hope for a Dream.” Sunday, Oct. 22, she will distribute 200 beds to children 12 and under.

Names of children in need have been provided by Las Cruces Public Schools.

“In so many cases, families don’t have options for children,” Bowman said. “We know how tough it is for some of our neighbors. These young children can’t make choices.

“But we had the opportunity to make this happen for them and I’m so grateful.”
