City Council buys land for new park facilities for $1.8 million

On a unanimous vote, the Las Cruces City Council approved the purchase of land near the Field of Dreams sports complex during a meeting on March 18.

According to the agreement, the city will spend $1,815,000 plus closing costs of $4,000 for 21.15 acres of land intended for park facilities located at the southeast corner of Motel Boulevard and Bruins Lane.

“Some of the amenities to be constructed within the park include parking, turfgrass, picnic and gathering areas, trailhead amenities, playground equipment, drinking fountains, and shade trees,” a document describing the plan stated.

The land was purchased from the Lutheran Church Extension Fund-Missouri Synod. According to city documents, the land is valued between $1,430,000 and $2,116,000.

The purchase is funded from the city’s park impact fee, which must be used for new park construction. The city collects the fees from home buyers when they purchase a new home. The fees are $2,300 per unit.

All six city council members voted in favor of the land purchase. Mayor Eric Enriquez was absent from the meeting.
