A deputy with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department killed a man during a shootout near Shalem Colony on June 19, according to a news release.

DASO did not identify the man killed but said they would hold a news conference to provide further details about the shooting on June 20.

DASO did provide some details about the encounter. In the news release, they said police were alerted to a potential drunk driver in Mesilla around 11:30 p.m. Mesilla Marshals located the vehicle inside their jurisdiction and initiated a chase but broke off after losing sight of the car.

According to the news release, a DASO deputy discovered the car around 11:55 p.m. near Valley Drive and Lohman Avenue.

“The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle continued driving erratically and failed to yield,” the news release said, without providing more detail about the circumstances that led to the chase.

The chase ended near Shalem Colony, along the Rio Grande. Gunfire was exchanged, the news release said without stating who fired first or how many shots were fired. The driver was struck by gunfire and later succumbed to his injuries at a Las Cruces hospital. According to DASO, deputies attempted to render aid before transporting the man. The deputy involved was uninjured.

"Unless otherwise notified, there will be a live press conference held at the main station, 845 N. Motel Blvd, on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Until then, no other information will be released," the release said.
