Both defendants were arrested and charged with several crimes, including aggravated battery causing great bodily injury, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and felon in possession of a firearm.

June 23 shooting at South Telshor apartments

The first of the two shootings occurred on June 23 at an apartment on the 1400 block of S. Telshor Boulevard and left a man critically injured. The man, who has not been identified, remains hospitalized.

Police arrested and charged Sergio Guadalupe Jacquez, 30, with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery that may cause death or great bodily harm, possession of a firearm by someone previously convicted of a felony and violations of parole and probation.

According to court records, a police officer was called to the apartment complex and discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood. The officer broke into the apartment, cleared the flat and began performing medical aid on the victim.

Witnesses later told detectives they heard two to three gunshots ring out from the apartment before seeing Jacquez running outside in nothing but his boxer briefs, holding a handgun. A detective later learned that Jacquez resided in Anthony, N.M..

He was later arrested at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry. The court records do not indicate whether he was arrested in Mexico or on his way into Mexico before his arrest.

Court records also did not hint at what might have motivated the shooting.

Jacquez is being held in jail as of this articles publication. Prosecutors with the 3rd Judicial District Attorneys Office filed a motion requesting a judge keep Jacquez in jail indefinitely and without bond. The court has yet to schedule that hearing.

July 7 shooting on North Alameda

The more recent of the two shootings occurred on the 2200 block of N. Alameda Boulevard on July 7 around 9 a.m. The shooting injured an 18-year-old man.

Police arrested and charged John Alexander Moreno, 28, with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. According to an affidavit, Moreno and another man got into an altercation on July 7.

The man believed that Moreno had stolen a cell phone from a mutual acquaintance, which led to the confrontation, per police. The altercation escalated when Moreno drew a handgun and fired a round into the 18-year-olds stomach.

The 18-year-old was transported to an El Paso hospital.
