The Doña Ana County Commission joined the nationwide recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and honored La Casa Inc. domestic violence program for its efforts in domestic violence prevention, awareness and support, the county said in a news release. Commissioners’ vote to recognize La Casa came at their Sept. 28 regular meeting.
La Casa, Inc., a nonprofit established in 1981, is now the largest provider of domestic violence services in the state.
Seeing the dire need for a shelter, La Casa founders Diane Benson, Emily Colon, Charlene Conlee, Carmen Garza, Judy Floyd, Joseph Holmes, former state Senator Mary Kay Papen, Heather Pollard, Billy Taylor and Phala White garnered funds and community support to convert an old armory building in Las Cruces into a shelter. To this day, it houses domestic violence survivors and their children.
White, Pollard and Papen were at the Sept. 28 commission meeting to receive the county’s proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
La Casa Inc. served 299 victims and survivors in 2020.
La Casa will host its 24th Annual Candlelight Vigil at Plaza de Las Cruces, 700 N. Main St., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21. The event commemorates victims of domestic violence and celebrates survivors.
