New Mexico State University’s theatre department will open the 2024-25 season with “a campy new twist” on Bram Stoker’s iconic vampire tale.
An ensemble student performers is rehearsing “Dracula, a Comedy of Terrors,” an off-Broadway success written by Steve Rosen and Gordon Greenberg.
Five actors – Carlos Huereca, Eliza Phillips, Okalani Ventura, Vance Cook and Mario Montiel – play “over 15 characters in this fast-paced satirical slapstick full of gender-bending, quick changing, clever word play and pop culture references a la Mel Brooks,” the theatre arts department reported in a news release.
The production, directed by NMSU theatre professor Nichole Hamilton, previews Sept. 26 at 5:30 p.m. with a costume contest and post-show discussion, with half off the price of admission.
The regular run opens Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. with a post-show reception, with additional 7:30 p.m. performances on Sept. 28, Oct. 4, Oct. 5 and a 2 p.m. matinee on Oct. 6.
