Dress the Child continues after 34 years

Posted

The 2023 Dress the Child begins dressing children this weekend, as the annual shopping events begin.

The program raises funds to purchase new clothing for students in need in the Las Cruces and Gadsden public schools.

The October annual dinner, with the theme “Yacht Party 2 Mexican Riviera,” generated more than $30,000 in critical funding for the Dress the Child of Las Cruces program.

The fundraising dinner, in its 34th year, was held at the Amador Live outdoor patio and featured chefs from the Grapevine Plaza & Event Center, Amador Bar & Grill, Doña Ana Community College’s (DACC) Culinary Arts program, D.H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro, Memorial Medical Center, Hacienda de Mesilla, and Salud! de Mesilla.

The food was fabulous, the community turnout was great and the generosity of our sponsors made this a very successful event. The funds that were generated will enable Dress the Child to take 300 desperately impoverished children who attend Las Cruces Public Schools and the Gadsden Independent School District shopping for new clothing and shoes in November and December.

Chef Vince Campbell of Grapevine Plaza served as event coordinator and Enrique Hernandez, executive chef at Amador Bar & Grill, served as the host chef. Other chefs included Tom Drake and Jenn Hart of DACC; Garrett Moore, executive chef from D.H. Lescombes; Paul McKim, executive chef and food service director at Memorial Medical Center; Cecilia Castro, executive chef from Hacienda de Mesilla; and Chef Rusell Hernandez, co-owner of Salud!

This year’s event sponsors were Citizens Bank of Las Cruces and Household Furniture at the Commodore Level and Mynatt Springer, P.C. and Conterra Networks at Capitan’s Level.

We would also like to thank Amador Live CEO Max Bower; Carleigh Simon, Megan Romig, Melanie Stuart and their students from Centennial High School who did an outstanding job as the evening’s DACC culinary arts students, who served as assistant dinner chefs; Jan and Giuseppe Portillo, Jamie and Jake Painter and Anne Clark, who made the wonderful table decorations; and students in Annie Lisak’s art classes at Tombaugh Elementary School, who made the one-of-a-kind ornaments for our first ever Dress the Child giving tree.

You can still donate to this year’s Dress the Child program, more students can be added to the shopping events. Send your check to Las Cruces Rio Grande Rotary Foundation, ATTN: Loren Kuehne, 3265 Arrowhead Road, Suite 200, Las Cruces, NM 88011.
