Former Aggie coach at ACU

Former NM State men’s basketball coach Paul Weir has accepted a job at Abilene (Texas) Christian University as its deputy athletic director and chief operating officer.

He was most recently at Eastern New Mexico University, where he had served as athletic director since 2021.

Weir served for several seasons as an Aggie assistant coach under head coach Marvin Menzies. When Menzies left to take the job at UNLV, Weir was named NM State head coach before the 2016-17 season. During that first year, Weir led the Aggies to a 28-6 record, the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships and an NCAA tournament appearance.

After that season, Weir left to take the head coaching position at the University of New Mexico, where he coached for four seasons.

"Paul brings an extremely valuable skill set to our ACU athletics leadership team with his experience as both an athletic director at the Division II level and a head coach in a high-profile sport at the Division I level," said ACU Vice President for Athletics Zack Lassiter. "His energy. curiosity and attention to detail are infectious and will fit right in with the upward trajectory of our department. He will make us better and I am so grateful that he, Alma, Theodore and Noah will be joining us in Abilene."
Weir oversaw several facility improvements at ENMU. The softball field was renovated
with new turf, bullpens, and outfield fencing. Greyhound Arena is set to install its first
ever videoboard during 23-24 along with sideline videoboards for an enhanced experience for athletics and events. The weight room was renovated with new equipment and a first-ever nutrition space for ENMU athletes. A new athletic training room was built at the football fieldhouse and a recovery room added for all student-athletes to use. Funding was also secured for a significant investment into the soccer programs.
He also helped ENMU athletics develop their first-ever endowments. 
"My family and I are pinching ourselves that this door has opened for us at ACU," said Weir. "To embark upon joint excellence as a Christian, in the classroom, and as an athlete is a journey we can't wait to serve. Thank you to President Schubert for the decades of building ACU's unbelievable trajectory and for permitting me to come aboard to help in whatever ways I can.”
Weir holds a Ph.D. in educational leadership administration and a master's in business administration both from NMSU, as well as master's degrees from Northwestern State University and the University of Iowa.
Weir and his wife, Alma, a Las Cruces native, have two sons, Theodore and Noah.
