Barbara “Mother” Hubbard, at age 96, gazes up with delight at a Chanukah menorah as she and New Mexico State University professor and filmmaker Ross Marks are elevated 30 feet above the ground at Plaza de Las Cruces downtown on Dec. 10. Hubbard lit the menorah following a public address by Rabbi Bery Schmukler of the Alevy Chabad Jewish Center.
The gathering in the downtown plaza included activities for young and old, latkes and other treats, hot cocoa and coffee for hundreds who stopped to witness the observance of the eight-day Jewish festival.
