A jury convicted a Las Cruces man of manslaughter following a road rage incident near S. Espina Street and University Avenue in 2022.
Jason Salias, 38, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter on May 10 following a weeklong jury trial in the 3rd Judicial District court. A jury found Salias killed Jose Gomez, 22, when Salias rammed his Ford SUV into Gomez’ motorcycle. During the trial, Salias said he acted in self-defense.
According to police, Salias said Gomez chased him around Las Cruces before the crash. Salias also said he feared Gomez was going to shoot him.
Salias was held in jail on the matter for more than a year before he was released in May 2023. He was initially charged with first-degree murder, which the jury found him not guilty of. Instead, the jury convicted Salias of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
Salias could face up to three years in prison. As of the publication of this article, the court had not scheduled a sentencing hearing.
