Las Cruces, Mayfield both advance in state football


Both the Las Cruces and Mayfield high football teams won their opening round games in the New Mexico state playoffs and are advancing on to the second round.

In the 6A playoffs, fifth-seeded Las Cruces beat No. 12 Clovis 42-7 Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Field of Dreams.

The Bulldawgs, 6-4 overall, will now face No. 4 seeded Centennial, 8-1, at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12 at the Field of Dreams.

The two teams met earlier this year with Centennial winning 42-41 . Centennial had a first-round bye.

In 5A, No. 5 Mayfield, 7-4, beat No. 12 Los Alamos 49-3 Friday, Nov. 5 at the Field of Dreams. Mayfield will face No. 4 Artesia at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13 in Artesia.
