Las Cruces woman honored with Live Your Dream award

Soroptimist International’s Las Cruces chapter announced more than $10,000 in Live Your Dream Education and Training awards to 10 women from New Mexico and west Texas.

Cinthia Mullen of Las Cruces was among the honorees, as a full-time working mother completing a bachelor’s degree at New Mexico State University while support two children, according to the release. Mullen said she is aiming for a career in teaching after 13 years working as a school secretary. She is on track to complete her degree in 2026.

In a news release, the organization said the awards recognize “women who have demonstrated determination, resiliency and the ability to work toward educational goals.” The award money may be used for tuition, books, child care, transportation or other education-related expenses.

The awards ceremony on March 9 was dedicated to Maggie Campbell Reynolds, a supporter of the Live Your Dream program who presented laptop computers to past winners. Reynolds, who was married to Doña Ana County Commissioner Shannon Reynolds, died last November. The Soroptimist chapter remembered her for raising two daughters on her own while serving as a jet engine mechanic in the U.S. Air Force and later completed a degree in social work, followed by a master’s degree and career as a social worker and meditator.

The cash awards were funded with the support of the Nusenda Foundation, the Devasthali Family Foundation Fund through the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, Dori-Joe Farm and the John and Eunice Davidson Fund.

The Soroptimist International of the Americas is a nonprofit volunteer organization with a mission to improve the lives of women and girls through local economic empowerment programs. The SI chapter in Las Cruces served the entire state and El Paso.
