Corazón Collective, a group of Texas- and California-based Latinx poets and writers, will tour New Mexico and El Paso June 16-24, including a stop in Las Cruces Sunday, June 18.

Las Cruces events will include a writing workshop, 2-4 p.m. June 18, at Nopalitos Galería, 326 S. Mesquite St. The workshop is entitled “Gritos: On Finding the Sources of Our Voices,” and is led by ire’ne lara silva, the collective said in a news release.

“We will be looking at gritos (“shouts” in English) from another viewpoint – as a way of finding our own deepest personal voice, to ground the creative mind in our bodies, to root the voice in our hearts and to both release and control emotion in the body and voice,” the news release said.

The workshop will include visualization exercises, physical stances, sound-making experimentation and writing/art prompts to examine how we perceive our voices, the collective said. No experience or familiarity with gritos is needed. All genres and writing experience levels are welcome.

The cost of the workshop is $50. Full and partial scholarships are available. To apply for a scholarship, send two lines describing financial need. To register, send an email to irenelarasilva@yahoo.com.

A poetry reading will be held at 6 p.m. at Nopalitos Galería and is free of charge.

“The Corazón Collective is a group of women who “write toward liberation and transformation,” the collective said in a news release.

Collective members are Jen Yáñez-Alaniz, author of “Surrogate Eater”; jo reyes-boitel, author of “Michael + Josephine and mouth”; Carmen Calatayud, author of “In the Company of Spirits”; Angelina Sáenz, author of “Edgecliff”; and ire’ne lara silva, author of multiple collections, including “Cuicacalli/House of Song” and “flesh to bone.”

Local event sponsors include Nopalito Restaurant and Nopalitos Galería, Casa Camino Real Bookstore, A Still Small Voice 4U, Inc., Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces, Las Cruces Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Weaving for Justice and KTAL Radio.

The collective will also present workshops and readings in El Paso, Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
