‘Boo to the flu’

Local hospitals providing free flu vaccines this month

Posted

It’s flu season again, and two local hospitals are offering drive-thru flu shots to improve the community’s public health.

The yearly “Boo to the Flu” event lasts from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Oct. 19 at both MountainView Regional Medical Center and Three Crosses Regional Hospital while flu vaccine supplies last, according to a news release from the state Department of Health.

The release said that vaccinations are free of charge, but anyone with insurance, including Medicaid or Medicare, should bring their insurance card with them.

“Flu vaccines are updated every year to offer us the best protection against the virus,” Dr. Miranda Durham, chief medical officer of the health department, said in the news release. “Getting you and your family vaccinated every year helps reduce the chances of getting sick, missing work or school, or developing serious illness.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 140,00 and 710,000 people are hospitalized from influenza each year in the U.S., and between 12,000 and 52,000 people die from flu.
