Mayor pro tem touts council’s OK of country club rezoning

The Las Cruces City Council’s March 7 vote to approve zoning changes on 75 acres of land known as the Las Cruces County Club property will result in responsible development of the site, Mayor Pro Tempore Kasandra Gandara said two days after the vote.

“I think it’s going to mean a lot to this community,” said Gandara, whose district includes the site.

Property owner and developer Tetrad Property Group of Omaha, Nebraska “will be good neighbors,” Gandara said, noting that Tetrad is already making arrangements to have dead trees and trash removed from the site, which is unimproved except for the abandoned Las Cruces County Club building.

Gandara said site development will be driven by the Apodaca Blueprint, which the city council adopted in 2018 as the land use plan for the property. The ordinance approved by the city council March 7 includes conditions on zoning changes that were granted to ensure the blueprint is followed, she said.

And the council vote does not put an end to public input on the development, Gandara said.

“There will be plenty of opportunities for folks to weigh in”, she said.

Gandara said an upcoming traffic impact analysis that is part of the property’s development “will be very helpful.”
