Memorial Medical Center seeks artwork reflecting COVID-19 impact

Memorial Medical Center (MMC) has expanded the Memorial Art Initiative, inviting southern New Mexico artists to participate in a new project.

Artists are invited to submit artwork reflecting the impact of COVID-19 statewide and nationally, MMC said in a news release.

“Art can be personal and reflective and/or highlighting the heroic efforts all of us, especially those serving on the medical frontlines, are making at this remarkable time,” the release said.

Through its art initiative and with the help of the Las Cruces art community, MMC has been able to “showcase the abundant artistic talent in our region,” the hospital said. “Though the hospital is presently open only to patients, the work inspires all of the medical staff and support teams everyday as they come to work.”

“Art will help us fear less, so we can understand in new ways,” said MMC Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Don Hislop, who came up with the idea for the project.

The work selected for this project will only be on display for the medical staff. Once the hospital resumes normal operations, it will be showcased to the public. Work can be sold or donated to MMC.

“There has never been something so gratifying as to see and hear the reactions of MMC staff and visitors to artwork so many artists are showing at MMC.” said Cynthia de Lorenzi, a local artist who assisted in curating work for the hospital.

To submit art for consideration, send a jpg of the work, including title, medium, artist name, phone number, email address, size and price/value to CynthiadeLorenzi@gmail.com. Also include biography and an image of the artist.
