New Mexican seniors compete well in national Senior Olympics

According to final results from New Mexico Senior Olympics, Inc. nearly 300 athletes from Las Cruces, Doña Ana County and throughout New Mexico medaled in events during the 2023 National Senior Games held this summer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Las Cruces and New Mexico senior athletes as old as 90 won gold and silver medals in sports such as archery, badminton, golf and power walking to shuffleboard, swimming, track and field, volleyball, table tennis and bowling.

Philipp Djang of Doña Ana, won four gold medals and three silver medals in men’s swimming for the 65-69 age group. Djang finished first in the 100-meter backstroke, the 100-meter individual medley, the 200-meter individual medley and the 50-meter backstroke. He finished second in the 200-meter backstroke, the 50-meter freestyle, and the mixed 200-yard free relay.

 Robbie Finney-McFarlane of Elephant Butte won a gold medal in the women’s javelin event ages 90-94.

Mandy Owens of Alamogordo won two gold medals in women’s powerwalking for the 55-59 age group. Owens finished first in both the 1,500 meters and the 5K.

Jayne Milavec of Las Cruces won two silver medals in women’s powerwalking, for the 60-64 age group. Milavec finished second in both the 1,500-meter and 5K.

Al Berryman of Las Cruces earned two silver medals in men’s road racing in the 80-84 age group. Berryman finished second in both the 10K and 5K.

Edward Frank of Las Cruces finished fourth in tennis mixed doubles in the 80-84 age group, and Martha Trost of Las Cruces finished fourth in tennis women’s doubles in the 70-74 age group.

Amelia Pilcher of Las Cruces, finished fifth in tennis women’s doubles in the 60-64 age group.

David Hall of Las Cruces, was sixth in men’s golf, ages 90-94.

Gilbert Sollars of Las Cruces finished seventh in men’s golf, ages 75-79.

Dianna Lentz of Las Cruces was 16th in the women’s long jump in the 60-64 age group.

Eileen Shult of Mesquite finished 18th in women’s swimming, 50-meter freestyle in the 65-69 age group.
