“I am playing Tom Sawyer looking for generous folks who would like to have some fun with us spending Saturday, Sept. 11, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., whitewashing three sides of the CCC schoolhouse,” said Human Systems Research, Inc. (HSR) Executive Director Deb Dennis.
Safety gear and tools along with lunch, snacks and drinks will be provided, she said.
Local architectural historian Jean Fulton, the owner of TimeSprings, Inc., which is dedicated to conserving cultural resources, “will be teaching us how to make lime wash (whitewash just like Tom Sawyer used on his fence) and how to apply it,” Dennis said. “Lime wash has the consistency of 2 percent milk, so it is much easier to work with than any paint and cleans up much faster.”
Anyone interested should contact Dennis at 575-524-9456 or ddennis@humansystemsresearch.org to provide name and contact information.
The whitewashing is part the ongoing renovation of the CCC schoolhouse building at 535 S. Melendres St., which is the home of HSR, the oldest nonprofit in New Mexico doing anthropological and archaeological research and preservation work. HSR was founded in February 1972.
