One dead, one arrested in Missouri Ave. apartment stabbing

Posted

A Las Cruces man faces murder charges after police said he stabbed another man at an apartment on Missouri Avenue on June 5.

Gary Allyn, 60, was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on June 6 after police said he killed a 61-year-old man at Allyn’s apartment on the 1600 block of S. Missouri. Prosecutors have filed a motion seeking to hold Allyn in jail without bond. A date for that hearing has not been set. Police did not identify the victim, saying his family was still being notified.

According to an affidavit, police believe the death was discovered by two people who knew Allyn but were apparently uninvolved in the stabbing. The two people walked to Allyn’s apartment and found Allyn and the victim lying on the floor. The latter had been stabbed multiple times, and Allyn had his blood on parts of his body, according to an affidavit.

When they called 911, the affidavit said the two people asked Allyn if he’d killed the other man. He said he did. When they asked with what weapon, Allyn allegedly replied, “Everything and anything.”

Police did not find a weapon at the crime scene, according to the affidavit. But they said they did find a “blue in color blade handle, but no blade attached to it” near the victim’s feet.

The affidavit also suggested the two men had known each other for a while.

As of the publication of this article, Allyn remains jailed.

Court records show that the 3rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office prosecutors requested that a district judge find that Allyn should be jailed before the trial.

To do this, prosecutors must prove that Allyn presents a danger to the community. Then they must prove that no release conditions, such as an ankle monitor or cash bond, can protect the public’s safety.

Most people in Doña Ana County charged with murder are held on pretrial detention.
