Former NM State baseball star Nick Gonzales was called up to the Major Leagues’ Pittsburg Pirates Friday, June 23, and got his first big league hits June 27.

In a 9-4 victory Tuesday over the San Diego Padres in Pittsburgh, Gonzales helped the Pirates end a lengthy losing spell by hitting a triple and a home run, with two runs scored and two RBI.

Wednesday, June 28, the Pirates beat the Padres again, 7-1, with Gonzales going 1-3 with a single and a run.

In his first few games with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gonzales saw action at both second base and shortstop, as well as a pinch-hitter. According to reports at ESPN.com, Gonzales also performed well with the glove.

The Pirates spent much of the first half of the season in first place in the National League Central Division, but losing 12 out of 13 dropped them to fourth place.

Gonzales walked and scored a run for the Pirates June 24, as Miami defeated Pittsburgh 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the 11th inning. He was 0-for-3 June 23 and 0-for-1 June 25.

While with the Aggies, Gonzales made multiple All-American teams and was the NCAA batting champion in 2019 with a .432 average. In 2020, Gonzales was named national player of the year.

Following the 2020 season, he was selected by the Pirates with the seventh overall pick in the draft, the highest spot ever for an Aggie.
