David Lindsay-Abaire’s Tony-nominated drama, “Good People,” opens next weekend at No Strings Theatre Company in downtown Las Cruces.
Through an ensemble of characters, the 2011 play probes poverty, working class and middle class life and social tropes about economic status and personal virtue. In a news release, the theatre wrote: “Does a successful life require hard work? Good luck? Both? And how do we define those we refer to as ‘good people?’ With unusual skill and sensitivity David Lindsay-Abaire explores the worlds of both ‘self-made’ success and lingering poverty.”
The script was nominated for several “outstanding play” awards following its Broadway premiere, but it was Frances McDormand’s role as Margie, a single mom befallen by misfortune, that won the Tony and other awards.
The No Strings productions of “Good People,” directed by Nikka Ziemer, runs Oct. 18 thru Nov. 3 at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Main Street. The production features set design by Joshua Taulbee, light design by assistant director Bekah Taulbee and costume design by Autumn Gieb. Darlene De Mondo is the stage manager and prop designer.
Performances are 8 p.m. on Fridays, Oct. 18, 25 and Nov. 1; and Saturdays, Oct. 19, 26 and Nov. 2. There are Sunday matinées on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 at 2:30 p.m. as well as a Thursday performance on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.. Tickets are $18 regular admission, $15 for students and seniors over, and all seats on Thursday are $12.
