Queen’s Green Canopy grows in Mesilla

Posted

Before she passed, the Queen of England launched a global initiative called the Queen’s Green Canopy, with a goal of planting trees throughout the world.

Facilitated by the Town of Mesilla and the Borderplex Alliance, one of those trees now grows in Mesilla, the only one in New Mexico and quite possibly the last one officially recognized by the project, which ended March 31.

“We are honored to host this dedication ceremony for the Queen’s Green Canopy in our town,” said Mesilla Mayor Nora L. Barraza.

Borderplex Alliance CEO Jon Barela said the canopy “is an incredible initiative that brings the Borderplex region and the United Kingdom closer and celebrates the special relationship between our two great nations. I’m proud our region is playing a part in this historic designation.”
