Registration open for basketball league

Posted

The city of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department announced individual registration for its Spring Youth Sportsmanship Basketball League on Monday.

According to a news release, four age divisions will be offered to all genders between ages 4 and 12, with one division each for middle school boys and girls, age 14 and under. Proof of age or a Parks and Recreation Activity ID card will be required.

Additionally, middle school participants will need to provide grade verification.

League play begins the week of March 18, with space limited in all divisions and registration on a first-come, first-served basis.

The activity ID cards can be obtained when a child and parent or guardian appear in person at the Meerscheidt Recreation Center, 1600 E. Hadley Avenue, to complete a permission form, provide proof of age and have the child’s photo taken. The cards can be obtained 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, or 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, per the news release.

Online registration for league play will be via LasCruces.gov/recreation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8. For online registration, the activity ID must be on file by Monday, Feb. 5.

In-person registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 10. Here, too, a current activity ID card or birth certificate will be required, as well as proof of grade for middle school students.

The age divisions are: 6-under, 8-under, 10-under and 12-under for all genders; and 14-under for boys and girls (middle school only).

Teams will be organized at the discretion of Meerscheidt Recreation Center staff.

Participants will be required to play in their respective age division and not allowed to “play up” a division. Requesting placement onto particular teams is not allowed. Siblings in the same household may play on the same team but only if they qualify in the same age division, and sibling team requests must be documented by staff at the time of registration. To ensure a sibling team request was documented at registration, call 575-541-2563.

Switching teams will be allowed once they are formed and assigned to coaches.

More information is available via the center at 575-541-2564 or by email at athletics@lascruces.gov.
