The Las Cruces Fire Department dispatched their Technical Rescue Team of seven firefighters to assist in water rescues.
In a news release on June 20, the city announced that the team would support emergency response efforts stemming from the South Fork and Salt Fires burning around Ruidoso. The fires combined with heavy rains to create flash flooding incidents. According to officials, the double disaster of fire and flood has displaced thousands, killed at least two people and destroyed some 1,400 structures.
“The deployment of the TRT is a testament to the collaborative spirit of municipal agencies,” said Jason Smith, Las Cruces Fire Department Chief, in the news release. “This joint effort is aimed at enhancing community resilience and ensuring rapid response capabilities during this natural disaster.”
Smith added, “By taking proactive measures to address potential hazards posed by flash floods, LCFD is demonstrating its commitment to public safety for our neighbors in Ruidoso.”
The news release said the team will coordinate with local emergency management personnel and first responders in Ruidoso.
