LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Thanks to mayor, police chief

Posted

Dear editor,

I attended the Las Cruces City Council meeting on Aug. 5 where the proposed solicitation and shopping cart ordinances were voted on. Both ordinances were proposed by Chief Jeremy Story of the LCPD. Both ordinances are intended to help improve public safety in Las Cruces. I want to thank Mayor Enriquez and the council for passing the two ordinances in a 4-3 vote. The three councilors and their supporters in attendance only had one narrative in opposition to these ordinances. Their only narrative was that these ordinances would only hurt the poor, people of color, the homeless and those with mental issues. They offered no narrative on improving public safety for citizens and businesses in Las Cruces. All they harped about was the need for low cost housing and housing for the homeless. That’s a whole separate issue the city certainly needs to address. Last of all, I must thank Chief Story for his tireless effort over many months to prepare and present these ordinances for approval. He led the charge to get this done and make it possible.
