Tresco Works celebrates Disability Employment Awareness month

Posted

Tresco Works is joining the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy in recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM in October.

Tresco, Inc., is a Las Cruces-based nonprofit that helps employ people with disabilities, with more than 315 employees and more than 70 contracts employing about 230 disabled people in 11 New Mexico counties, including Doña Ana County.

The purpose of NDEAM is to educate people “about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities,” Tresco said in a news release.

"Advancing Access and Equity" is the theme of NDEAM 2023, the 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, “which marks a major milestone in our nation’s ongoing quest to advance access and equity for all Americans,” the news release said.

The history of NDEAM goes back to 1945, when it started as a week and focused only on people with physical disabilities, Tresco said. Later, it expanded to a full month and its name and scope evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing the workforce inclusion of people with all nature of disabilities.

Reflecting this year's theme throughout October, Tresco Works will engage in activities to educate the community on disability employment issues and its commitment to an accessible and equitable work culture, including:

  • Tresco Works annual NDEAM Celebration breakfast, 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Tresco, Inc., 1800 Cooper Loop in Las Cruces. The public is welcome. For reservations, contact Stacie Allen at 575-528-2206 and sallen@trescoinc.org.
  • Tresco will host a job fair, 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at 1800 Copper Loop. For more information, contact Tresco Recruiting Specialist Angie Urbin at 575-528-2200.

“Tresco Works is proud to be a part of this year's National Disability Employment Awareness

Month," said Tresco President and CEO Sylvia Washington. "We want to spread the important message that we value all perspectives, including those of individuals with disabilities. Everyone deserves the chance to learn and shine; here at Tresco Works we are proud to offer employment opportunities to persons with varying abilities throughout the state of New Mexico."
