‘Une Vie’ showcases acid paintings

Posted

The Mad Hatter Gallery’s debut exhibit, beginning Sept. 6, will be “Une Vie,” a showing of acid paintings by Salome Ali Jaffe.

“Jaffe explores the depths of the human experience and self expression, particularly for women,” gallery owner and curator Penny Peace told the Las Cruces Bulletin. She then quoted from the artist’s website, SalomeJaffe.com, “that even in the face of challenges, there is grace to be found in our ability to adapt and endure while striving for a better reality.”

On her personal website, Jaffe explains that metals are her primary medium, including acidic reactions visible on the surfaces of her work. She draws a parallel between the effects on her materials and the human experience.

“I utilize acids and metals to embody the transformative themes explored in my work,” her website states. “As an alumnus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I am currently based in rural New Mexico, where I am profoundly influenced by the natural environment and its impact on materials.”

In September she begins a three-month Santa Fe Art Institute Residency.

“Une Vie” will be on exhibit at the Mad Hatter Gallery, 221 N. Main St., Suite C, through Oct. 19.

The opening reception will be held 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6. After that, the gallery will be open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. More information is available at themadhattergallery@gmail.com.
