Velo Cruces will sponsor public bicycle rides in October

Posted

Saturday, Oct. 7

Every Body Rides With Grace (EBRWG), a program of Velo Cruces, Inc., will host the first annual Reduce the Carbon Footprint Bike Ride at La Llorona Park, 3440 W. Picacho Ave., 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 7.

EBRWG provides adaptive cycles to qualifying disabled people who are not able to acquire an adaptive cycle themselves, Velo Cruces said in a news release. Barriers to obtaining an adaptive cycle include prohibitive cost, lack of local availability and lack of support and guidance as to which cycle or accessory is best suited for a rider’s needs. EBRWG seeks to draw attention to these barriers and increase accessibility to cycle riding for children with disabilities, the organization said.

The ride is open to cyclists of all ages and abilities, with adaptive cyclists especially invited. The community is also invited to join this free family event and walk, ride or roll along the trail.

Volunteers from The HUB Community Bike Shop will be available to make minor bike repairs and help with a fix-a-flat station.

Participants can make their own carbon footprint using provided materials and learn about reducing the carbon footprint to help the environment, the news release said.

Free tee shirts will be available for the first 30 participants.

A restroom and water fountain are available at the park, but participants are also encouraged to bring drinking water. Helmets are required for all riders.

Monday, Oct. 9

Participants in the Share the Road Visibility Ride will gather at 7:05 a.m. at Las Cruces Railroad Museum, 351 N. Mesilla St., with departure time set at 7:15 a.m. It will end at Grounded, 300 N. Main St., where nonriders are welcome to join riders at about 8 a.m.

The ride is being held to build awareness that bicyclists and motorists can share the road safely and that commuting to work on a bicycle is a viable transportation choice, Velo Cruces said.

“Commuting by bicycle has multiple benefits, a second news release said. “Save money by riding just one day a week (to) cut 20 percent of your weekly fuel cost and save automobile maintenance expenses.  Fight pollution by using emission free transportation. Stay fit and use your commute time as your workout. Enjoy your commute and arrive at work refreshed and full of energy; ride off work stress on the way home.

“The Ride is a real-life, real-time demonstration of how bicyclists can ride with traffic safely,” Velo Cruces said.

The organization hosts a bike ride the second Monday of each month, it said.

“We bicycle together to help raise awareness among motorists of the presence of bicyclists, of motorists' ability to share the road safely with bicyclists, and of how bicyclists behave while driving in traffic,” Velo Cruces said. “The ride is led by League of American Bicyclists certified instructors. Bicyclists that wish to learn tips for better commuting skills are invited to participate.
