The nonprofit Southern New Mexico Mountain Biking’s (SNMTB) Sabados on Bikes with Friends is collaborating with Friends of the Organ Mountains to host a series of bicycle skills clinics for local elementary, middle and high school students.

The first workshop was held in September for about 20 elementary-school children.

Additional workshops are

  • 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, Doña Ana Trailhead, for students in grades nine-12. The clinic will include a break to safely view the solar eclipse that will take place that day. The trailhead is located near Red Hawk Golf Course, on County Road D053. To find the location, Google Doña Ana Trailhead and click on “Directions.”
  • 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at Sierra Middle School, for students in grades six-eight

Additional workshops will be held Saturdays, Dec. 9; and Jan. 13, Feb. 10, March 9 and April 13, 2024, SNMTB said on its website.

SNMTB recently received a $30,000 grant from the New Mexico Economic Development Department’s Outdoor Equity Fund to help reach its goal of creating a comprehensive youth mountain-biking program that reaches kids of all ages and demographics, helping to overcome traditional barriers to the sport due to gender, ethnic background, and economic status.
