The Academy for Learning in Retirement's (ALR) October Zoom series focuses on "Nuclear New Mexico," ALR said in a news release.
The series will explore the decision to place the Manhattan Project in New Mexico, the consequences of nuclear activities in Los Alamos, the responses of New Mexicans living downwind from the Trinity Site explosion, uranium mining and the Navajo people and the role of nuclear energy in climate change and national energy strategies.
Myrriah Gòmez, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the University of New Mexico Honors College and author of “Nuclear Nuevo Mèxico: Colonialism and the Effects of the Nuclear Industrial Complex on Nuevomexicanos,” will present the first two sessions, Monday, Oct. 9, and Wednesday, Oct. 11.
Gòmez will discuss “nuclear colonialism in New Mexico” and Trinity Site downwinders and radiation exposure.
Monday, Oct. 16, the presenter will be Marsha Weisiger, Ph.D., associate professor in the University of Oregon (UO) Department of History, author of “Dreaming of Sheep in Navajo Country,” holder of the Julie and Rocky Dixon Chair of U.S. Western History at UO and co-director of the Center for Environmental Futures. Weisiger will focus on uranium mining on the Navajo Reservation.
Wednesday, Oct. 18, James Conca, Ph.D., will conclude the series, discussing “Mitigating Climate Change – Do We Have a Plan B?” Conca is a trustee of the Herbert M. Parker Foundation at Washington State University (WSU) and science contributor to Forbes, with 40 years of experiences as a consultant to NASA, WSU, NMSU and Los Alamos, Pacific Northwest and Lawrence Livermore national labs.
All sessions will be live presented on Zoom, 10:30 a.m.-noon and recorded for later viewing.
The cost is $20 for a single month or $48 for the four fall months (16 sessions).

ALR offers presentations from September through May each year. The presentations are often given by current or retired NMSU faculty and staff members, along with other experts.
