The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) is partnering with the ARTE Institute for Lifelong Learning of Las Cruces to create six weekly art history classes focused on iconic American artist Georgia O’Keeffe, DAAC said in a news release.
The collaboration begins with a kickoff event, 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at DAAC, 230 S. Water St. Classes will be held 4-5:30 p.m. every Monday, June 19-July 21.
The cost is $245 per person, which entitles the participant to attend all six classes live and/or via Zoom, to receive recordings of the classes and access to the four-week Zoom class “History of Silk, Cotton, Wool and Linen” with Nicholas Dahle. The cost is reduced to only receive Zoom recordings of Key’s classes on O’Keeffe.
The classes are “an in-depth study of Georgia O'Keeffe's incredible artwork and her incredible life,” DAAC said. “The structure of the class will be to compare the artwork of European and American artists who were working at the same time as O'Keeffe.”
“Comparing O'Keeffe's work to the top artists of Europe and America reveals how exceptional and original she really was,” said ARTE co-founder Kathleen Key, who teaches art history at UTEP. “It is our goal for you to study her career beginning in 1915 to her last days in Santa Fe. We will also study the work of her greatest teacher, Arthur Wesley Dow, and the work of her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Several recent exhibits showcase her fashion style and clothing and her homes in Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch — so we will cover those as well.”
“Our main purpose is to prepare students to experience great works of art in person,” said ARTE co-founder Kathleen Albers, the former long-time DAAC executive director. “That's the ultimate classroom – museums and the actual landscapes and buildings that inspired great artists. That's why art, education and travel are the fundamentals of ARTE.”
This O'Keeffe classes will help prepare ARTE students for an Oct. 23-29 ARTE trip to "walk in the footsteps of Georgia O'Keeffe, to see where she lived and worked in Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, plus see the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe,” Albers said.
Albers and Key created ARTE (Art, Research, Travel and Education) in 2021.
