Black Box Theatre has July 17-18 auditions for upcoming play

Posted

No Strings Theatre Company at Black Box Theatre (BBT) will hold auditions for “Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music,” the first production of its 2023-24 season, at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, July 17 and 18, at BBT, 430 N. Main St.

Needed for the play are two men ages 30s-40s, a woman in her 20s, a woman in her 40s and a young male, age approximately 15, Herman said.

In the play, “Eve (she lives over the Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music Bar) is visited by her niece Catherine, a novice nun who has been asked to leave her convent,” Herman said. “Catherine yells unsuitable words at the wrong moment and barks like a dog. Roy is attracted to Catherine, whether she is a nun or not. What follows is a charming romantic comedy loaded with good country tunes.”

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. A perusal copy of the play is on reserve at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave. Ask at the help desk.

The play was written by Lee Blessing and will be directed by BBT co-founder/co-owner Ceil Herman. Blessing, 73, is a native of Minneapolis who now lives in New York City. He wrote “Down the Road,” which BBT performed in 2002 and “Two Rooms,” which BBT performed in 2005. He is a Tony award and Pulitzer Prize nominee who has written more than 20 plays and screenplays. Blessing is professor emeritus at Rutgers University, where he headed the graduate playwriting program for 12 years.

The play will be performed Aug. 25-Sept. 10 at BBT.
