Holy Cross Retreat Center dedicates second hermitage

Posted

Looking for a quiet place to pray, be creative, or be with your spouse? Holy Cross Retreat Center has recently dedicated its second hermitage, a comfortable building with a bedroom, kitchenette and full bath.

The first building, “Brother Fire Hermitage” was completed in 2018 and has served a wide variety of people seeking solitude and rest.

On Sunday, June 25, a group of volunteers joined me and other staff members to bless the “Sister Water Hermitage,” so named because it has a water fountain just outside the large window looking toward the mountains.  The volunteers devoted their time and skills over several months to create a beautiful space.

If you would like more information or want to reserve some time, you can call 575 524-3688, or check the website holycrossretreat.org and click on facilities.

Holy Cross Retreat Center was built by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Monaghan in 1913 with 14 rooms and a central patio. It was purchased by the Ordo Fratrum Minorum (The Order of Friars Minor, or OFM)

Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Barbara in Oakland, California in 1954. The first retreat at the site was held in 1957. The Franciscan Festival of Fine Arts was revived at the center after several years in September 2004.

The center, 600 Holy Cross Road in Mesilla Park, is about five miles south of downtown Las Cruces. Take Main Street south of Las Cruces and turn left on Holy Cross Road, about three miles south of the intersection of Main Street and University Avenue. For Google maps, enter 4889 South Main St.
