Public art planned for East Mesa complex

Posted

Finalists who have submitted proposals for a public art project at the East Mesa Public Recreation Complex are set to present to the city’s public art selection committee next Tuesday.

The public is invited to attend those presentations, which begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10 in conference room 2007-A at city hall, 700 N. Main Street.

The artists were told to design a site-specific outdoor art piece situated in the complex’s 10-acre park, according to a news release from the city. The park, located off of Sonoma Springs Avenue, features a playground, basketball courts and an open lawn with the Organ Mountains as a natural backdrop.

The committee selected four or five finalists from a pool of 154. The presentations are scheduled for half an hour apiece with extra minutes between each slot, as follows:

Artist 1: 1 p.m.

Artist 2: 1:45 p.m.

Artist 3: 2:30 p.m.

Artist 4: 3:15 p.m.

Artist 5 (tentative): 4 p.m.

The finalists were not identified in the news release.

The design utlimately selected by the committee will then be presented to the city art board and then to the Las Cruces City Coucil for approval at public meetings.
