Town hall addresses health care consolidation

Posted

New Mexico lawmakers this year gave the state Office of the Superintendent of Insurance oversight over changes of ownership of hospitals. That law expires in 2025, with lawmakers and OSI aiming to refine the law for the 2025 legislative session.

Toward that goal, OSI has holding town hall meetings around the state to discuss the issue with the public and gather feedback. The office is also accepting comments via email, and making video of the meetings available online. The meetings are free.

On Thursday, OSI staff will be at New Mexico State University’s Las Cruces campus from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to meet with the public. The session will be in Room 225 at the Hardman and Jacobs Undergraduate Learning Center, 1600 International Mall.

More information can be obtained, or comments submitted, via email at OSI.Consolidation@state.nm.us.

At OSI.state.nm.us, a link and password to watch videos of the meetings are available as well.

Under the current law, Senate Bill 15, the state Superintendent of Insurance – a position appointed by a nine-member nominating committee including four members selected by the governor – has the power to review and approve changes in hospitals’ ownership.
