Mesilla firefighters assist in Ruidoso

A forest fire burning near Ruidoso remains uncontained as of May 28.

The Blue 2 fire has burned 7,178 acres and is 0 percent contained, according to the village of Ruidoso. No homes have burned and no injuries have been reported. However, the fire has forced some evacuations. The fire is also causing smoke to pool over the village of Capitan and the Bonito area.

“Firefighters continue to use direct tactics to build fire line along the fire’s edge using hand tools and bulldozers while ensuring safety for all crews,” a news release said.

According to the village, 10 crews, 32 engines, six helicopters, six bulldozers and five water tenders have been deployed to battle the blaze. That includes a crew from the Mesilla Fire Department.

The village said they believe the fire was started by a lightning strike on May 16. It grew substantially in size over Memorial Day weekend, when high winds grew and expanded the fire.
