The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs presents family-friendly programming throughout the state. Here are just a few happening this week.

Sunrise Over the Ruins

During Fort Selden Historic Site's monthly Sunrise Over the Ruins program, a staff member will provide a guided tour of the ruins at 9 a.m. and then at 11 a.m. give a lecture inside about birding in Southern New Mexico, on Saturday, August 3. The presentation will highlight some of the best places to go birding and why they are great for enjoying one of the most popular recreational activities in the US. Programs included with general admission of $5 per adult. Children 16 years and younger are free.

Sunrise Over the Ruins Ranger-guided tour is from 9-10 a.m., Lecture is from 11 a.m.-12 p.m., Site opens at 6 a.m. at Fort Selden Historic Site, 1280 Fort Selden Road, Radium Springs, NM 88054. Friends of History Lecture

Friends of History First Wednesday Lecture Series features author and art historian Ellen A.W. Bradbury-Reid, from 12-1 p.m., Wednesday, August 7. She will draw on her memories of growing up as a child in Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. Her father, Edward Wilder, was part of the team which built the explosives shell for the “Fat Man” nuclear bomb detonated over Nagasaki in August 1945. This lecture is online only. Living History Family Day

Families can see history come alive at Fort Stanton Historic Site from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, August 10. All ages are welcome to Fort Stanton Living History Family Day. With regular admission, visitors can enjoy a tour of the old army cemetery, children’s craft projects, vintage games, and living history demonstrations. Fort Stanton’s Living History programs offer a unique experience to learn about the site through historical reenactments, games, and activities. Admission is $7 for adults and free for children 16 years and younger.

Living History Family Day take place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, August 10, at Fort Santon Historic Site, 104 Kit Carson Road, Fort Stanton. For more information visit NMHistoricSites.org/Fort-Stanton
