Femme Frontera Minifest screens new films

Posted

Experience the power of storytelling through the lens of talented women and gender-expansive filmmakers in the historic Plaza Theatre in Downtown El Paso at the inaugural Femme Frontera MiniFest, Saturday, August 10. The MiniFest will include two poignant coming-of-age feature films from the border that touch on relationships, resilience, and identity: “Hidden Flora” by local filmmaker and Femme Frontera Co-Director, Ryan Rox, and “Hummingbirds,” directed by Silvia Del Carmen Castaños and Estefanía “Beba” Contreras. All of these filmmakers will be in attendance.

The films are featured as part of an ongoing effort to increase representation of women and gender-expansive storytellers in border regions, especially alongside the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Femme Frontera is crucial to the border region for providing resources to underrepresented communities, and uplifting women and gender-expansive voices and their stories,” said Jackie Barragan, Co-Director of Femme Frontera.

The event will also feature an important panel discussion featuring Trans+ Filmmakers titled “Transcending Borders: Moving Beyond Identity.” The panel will dive deep into the themes and challenges within the film industry, offering valuable insights and inspiring conversations. Panelists for “Transcending Borders” include Aitch Alberto (“Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe”), StormMiguel Florez (“The Whistle”), Silvia Del Carmen Castaños (“Hummingbirds”), Ryan Rox (“Hidden Flora”), and Luca Silver (“What Is Sex?”)

As part of the MiniFest, there will also be an exclusive sneak peek at the highly anticipated “Ternura Radical,” a short documentary created by two filmmakers from either side of the border with the support of Femme Frontera’s “La Frontera Film Lab” program.

“La Frontera Film Lab has allowed U.S./Mexico filmmakers to collaborate and create stories about identities and life at the border,” said Mariana Gongora, Co-Director of Femme Frontera. Fellows from the La Frontera Film Lab Documentary include local filmmakers Celina Galicia, and Sara Gonzalez.

The Femme Frontera MiniFest breaks down borders from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday, August 10, at the Plaza Theatre, 125 W. Mills Ave., El Paso. For more information about the Femme Frontera MiniFest, including a full schedule, visit the website at FemmeFrontera.org/manifest#ffminifest
