Fire camp registrations open Friday

Posted

A two-week summer camp organized by the Las Cruces Fire Department to instill confidence and leadership skills in youth will open for registration Friday. Admission to the free day program is open to soon-to-be eighth graders.

It is the second year of the fire camp, working with youth ages 13 and 14 or entering eighth grade from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, from June 17 through 28.

Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Friday, May 17, at Fire Station 1, 201 E. Picacho Avenue, according to a news release. Parents and guardians are encouraged to arrive early, as the camp is limited to 15 participants. They should bring proof of the children’s ages and information about allergies or medical conditions.

The program includes physical exercise, EMT training, fireground operations and “a confidence course and leadership mentoring,” per the release. Campers will work with Las Cruces firefighters and will be served breakfast and lunch as well as water and snacks. The program will take place at Fire Station 1, with visits to the LCFD training and logistics facility and the department’s “burn building” on Zia Boulevard, with transportation between the latter two facilities provided by the fire department.
