A damaged fire hydrant created a small flood downtown on Jan. 12, leading to water shutoffs and a big mess in the heart of Las Cruces.
According to two people at the scene, water started pooling on Main Street in front of Organ Mountain Outfitters around 8:50 a.m. The water flowed down the walking path of Hadley Avenue and sprung from a damaged hydrant on the corner of Hadley and N. Church Street.
A city of Las Cruces spokesperson said the fire hydrant was struck but did not see if a vehicle hit the hydrant or if the hydrant experienced another failure.
Regardless, the damage created a sinkhole on the American Linen and Uniform Supply campus that consumed a trailer and several barrels as the hole deepened.
No injuries were reported, and the flooding subsided by noon, leaving mud and debris in its wake.
