This story has been updated to report the reopening of traffic.

Las Cruces police temporarily closed part of Sonoma Ranch Boulevard and neighboring roadways for a few hours Tuesday afternoon, from Sedona Hills Parkway to Rinconada Boulevard, to all foot and motorized traffic.

The city said the streets reopened to traffic at 4:10 p.m.

In a news release sent at 1:40 p.m., the city said an explosives disposal unit from Fort Bliss wasresponding to a storage facility on the 3400 block of N. Sonoma Ranch Boulevard. Later in the day, the city reported a "potentially dangerous device" had been removed from a storage unit.

Students and staff at Camino Real Middle School and Doña Ana Community College's East Mesa campus were asked to shelter in place.  The collage reportedly canceled classes for the day and evacuated the campus.
